History of the Rhône River House

The history of this building dates back to the end of the 19th century.

Around 1870, a dye works called Pochet was set up in Givors. In 1890, it became the Boiron dye factory, and in 1904, the Bruyas family acquired the town house adjoining the factory, transforming it into a hat factory under the Chapellerie Trois Six name, aimed at the national market.

In 1988, the town of Givors acquired this architectural complex following the closure of the factory. The Maison du fleuve Rhône was founded in 1989, with the aim of focusing on environmental, historical and technical studies of the Rhône valley, from its origins in Lake Geneva to the Camargue.

The site has since been renovated several times, most notably in 1994 with the creation of an auditorium and the Rosa Parks room. In 2024, after a further transformation, the Maison du Rhône will be reinvented as a cultural space open to all. This change marks the transition from a centre focused on environmental research to a place for intergenerational sharing, offering a multitude of cultural and social activities.

An innovative cultural space

The Maison du Rhône stands out for its ambition to make culture accessible to all audiences, from schoolchildren to senior citizens, including artists and local partners.

With its 1,000 m² of multi-purpose space, the site offers activities throughout the year, from exhibitions to open-air shows, conferences and workshops.

Among the most noteworthy installations is the Micro-Folie, a veritable digital museum. Here, visitors can discover works of art from the greatest French and international museums via high-definition screens and tablets. Visitors can also enjoy immersive experiences using virtual reality headsets, from a rollercoaster ride to visits to historic monuments such as the Château de Versailles.

The MDFR is also a place of creation with a FabLab, where visitors can innovate, experiment and make objects. The FabLab is open to everyone – amateurs, students and professionals – and encourages the exchange of know-how.

An intergenerational living space

The Maison du Rhône is not just a space dedicated to culture, it is also a service centre for senior citizens.

The Centre Communal d’Action Sociale (CCAS) offers a range of services and activities designed to improve the well-being and quality of life of the elderly. Whether it’s physical activities such as Nordic walking, cookery workshops or measures to prevent the loss of independence, seniors have access to a wide range of activities tailored to their needs.

The municipal restaurant, located on the ground floor of the building, is another meeting point for seniors, offering them a convivial place to share meals and take part in social events.

Plural and open spaces

The Maison du Rhône offers a wide range of spaces suitable for different types of event.

The 110-seat auditorium, for example, is used for conferences, shows and screenings. The Salle Rosa Parks, with its 200 seats, is often used for weddings, meetings and exhibitions, while the more intimate Orangerie can accommodate small groups of 20 people. These spaces are also available to hire for private or business events.

Outside, the park surrounding the house is a haven of peace, ideal for relaxing, picnicking or admiring the works of art on display in the open air.

Events such as pétanque competitions and shows are regularly organised here, making the area a real place of life and exchange for Givordins and visitors alike.

A centre for innovation and development

In addition to its cultural role, the Maison du Rhône plays a central role in the development of Givors. It is a vector of attractiveness for the town, contributing to the promotion of local initiatives and offering support to project leaders through a participative and inclusive approach. In this way, the MDFR gives local residents access to resources and opportunities that strengthen the town’s social and cultural fabric.

Supported by the Lyon metropolitan area and the French government, the Maison du Rhône embodies Givors’ determination to establish itself as a leading cultural centre in the region. By welcoming artists, associations and local organisations, it is helping to boost local cultural life while remaining open to national and international influences.
