The first river navigation simulator is now operational and it is the Rhône River that has the privilege of being virtualised!
Let’s discover this training tool dedicated to the professions of river transport.
The Rhône is known for being a stormy river that is difficult to navigate, particularly with regard to its seasonal variations in flow and the tributaries it crosses on its way to the Mediterranean.
The 1st river navigation simulator
Several organisations have joined forces to organise the development of the first river navigation simulator:
The Compagnie Nationale du Rhône (CNR), the Comité des Armateurs Fluviaux (CAF), the Centre d’Etudes et d’Expertise sur les Risques, l’Environnement (CEREMA), the Promofluvia association and Voies Navigables de France (VNF).
A unique river navigation simulator
With this simulation tool, unique in France, future pilots of boats, barges and other large motorised vessels will be able to practise river navigation on one of the largest waterways in France.
On the programme of this exceptional learning tool, 70 kilometres along the Rhône River and its main tributary the Saône, with 9 delicate sites listed, 15 simulation sections and numerous modifiable parameters:
Different flows, weather, day and night driving, type of boats and loading…
The 240° cabin offers a panoramic view with a multitude of scenarios to improve the know-how of the sailors and to simulate at best the conditions of the wheelhouse for the learners.
Presentation of the simulator in video
Based at the Edouard Herriot port in the Lyon Metropolitan Area, this simulator will be used for the ongoing training of current boat, barge and barge pilots, to eventually enable the professionalisation of new drivers, with a rate of 25 pilots and captains per year.
